You know, sometimes I start typing replies to these comments, and have to backspace the whole thing because SPOILERS. 😛
Uh I have to disagree with her here. You’re under siege, you’re going to starve sooner or later. And if staying is certain death, how is that helping your people? Unless the castle is self-sufficient, despite the crop-killing weather.
Well, her choices are a.) stay in the castle under siege, and hope whatever it is goes away on its own, since it seemed to arrive with no prompting, or b.) go out into the mist, where a number of people have died violently or disappeared without a trace.
Both staying AND going represent uncertain death; but going out into the mist is a slightly HIGHER risk of uncertain death. It’s a tough call to make.

So put all your hopes on a one armed stranger with a mysterious kid! Fool proof 😀 lol (he’s totally going to end up helping them though, if traditional awesome stranger logic is followed)
The rules of story plot development dictates that Masa will end up helping them. And successfully, too. 😛 Though whether or not there will be secondary consequences is another question.
Maybe the princess is just genre-savvy and figured sooner or later some protagonist would come along and help?
